After dinner, Chloe went back to her place and Sarah came back to her apartment with the rest of the Barneses. She showed them around, pointing out everything they might need, and then tried to stay out of their way and let them settle in.

She’d gotten a text from Veronica while they were eating – she’d told Sarah that she was on her way home and Sarah should come over whenever she was ready. It had been a relief, but it also made it hard for Sarah to eat. She just picked at her hamburger. Even after Veronica explicitly invited her over, Sarah wondered if she meant it.

Just go, she told herself, but she kept finding reasons to stay in the apartment a little bit longer. Was the water pitcher in the fridge filled? Was there a fresh tube of toothpaste in the bathroom? Were all the trash cans emptied?

Sarah was used to being the one who helped, not the one who needed help. She had a duffel bag of her own packed and waiting in the bottom of her small closet, but she couldn’t silence those nagging worries.

What if Veronica was only offering out of a sense of duty?

What if it was awkward?

What if it wasn’t?

“What are you doing?” April asked after Sarah’s fifth or sixth circuit around the apartment, checking everything.

“Sorry,” Sarah said. “Am I bothering you?”

“No, but you look bothered,” April said. “Everything okay?”

Just then, Sarah’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She dug it out and found a text from Veronica.

I’m ordering pizza. What do you want on yours?
